Profile & Contact

I am an entomologist and ecologist with 30 years professional experience. Having held a variety of posts with a number of multidisciplinary consultancies, I have established Harwood Biology to provide specialist biological consultancy to Consultants, Businesses and Individuals who require accurate identification, survey and analysis of insects and other invertebrates.
My technical skills lie mainly in the areas of entomology (both terrestrial and freshwater) and botany. In addition, I have expertise in arid ecology (dry forest, thorn scrub and desert habitats), described 21 species of tropical insects new to science and have extensive knowledge of tropical insect pests in agriculture.
I am active in the development of guidelines and methodologies to enhance the ecological services offered to clients, and to clarify the regulatory framework. I contributed to the current Natural England Standing Advice document for Protected Invertebrates, and formulated the decision chart for survey requirements.

and overseas, I use a range of techniques in accordance with UK, European, IFC PS(6) and EBRD guidelines. I have developed a
range of assessment and reporting methods to provide clients with compliant
reports and supporting documents, which are fully aligned with the appropriate
regulatory frameworks.

I have Expert Witness experience at Local Planning Inquiry, as well as supporting roles at a number of Public Inquiries for a variety of development types.
In addition to projects throughout the UK, I have worked on major infrastructure and research projects in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, West Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Central and South America. ,
Quantitative ecology is a particular interest, including the development of an analytical methodology for providing ecological input to Ecosystem Services Assessments and a Probabilistic Risk Assessment approach to undertaking Biodiversity Assessments on habitats/species with limited data.
